Once again ai art is being talked about on twitter or x or whatever the heck you want to call it. This time however several large companies have been caught utilizing ai art instead of consulting artists. From Wacom to Magic the Gathering to Gaomon, to even Square Enix.
Just to recap, here's the link to the previous article I had wrote.
Why is AI Art a problem?
AI Art is a problem because it takes from several different artists and tries to make a piece of art. A lot of the time it fails on the anatomy, hand structure, the hair will blend into various different aspects like a dress or earrings. In some cases, the "drawings" would have three arms or hands growing from somewhere. It's really comical to look at.
However, the larger problem is that it steals various art from other artists in an attempt to "learn". For these companies to use ai art instead of commissioning artists is kind of sad and pathetic.
Worse is Wacom who is a company that promotes a drawing tablet for human artists to draw and hone in their craft. It's ironic that they wouldn't pay someone to draw any advertisements especially when they're capable of paying someone.
What's the bottom line?
As per usual it has many artists concerned. For myself, I'm a budding artist, one that has been overtly critical of myself over the years. If anything this has taught me that I should practice regardless of what the future might bring. That's the only way that I'm going to improve with my own art. There's still niche communities in fandoms that will pay for commissions.
Though perhaps for Wacom, this might be a learning point for them as well. Perhaps they'll do better to pay the artists to commission their work for ads since they make products that serve the artist community. Same with Gaomon.
Conclusion
While this has people concerned about the future or the near future. However, as long as artists are vigilant and willing to call out these companies on their hokey business practices then I think our future can be secure. We can teach people about the dangers of ai art and hope that people will come to understand at what's at stake. Time will only tell.
