Smells Like Anti-Gaming Propaganda
Okay not yet, more like it's going to be anti-vtuber propaganda so bear with me
Writer’s Note: The views expressed in this are not up for debate. We can agree to disagree on my political opinions, the main point is that someone tried to commit a diabolical crime and use two known vtubers for it, and a rabid fan base that wants to crucify them is going to even more empowered by it. I’m also not going to name the guy who was arrested. I don’t want there to be any copycats or anything like that. For now he’s just counter protestor.
I normally don’t get into real life politics outside of writing blog posts on DEI and other things, it’s not something I like to get into. I really do hate talking about politics, not because my views are wrong but I hate how it devolves into this never ending circle jerk of someone pushing their ideals on me and wanting to make me feel bad for having a different opinion. I swear we need to start agreeing to disagree because nothing is going to raise my blood pressure more than talking politics. (And religion. For similar reasons oddly enough.)
Now unfortunately I’m going to have to talk about politics and vtubing because of an inicident that happened on Saturday in Nashville at the No Kings Protest; I can’t directly show the video but I can link it.
So at any rate, let me start with the beginning. For many people the idea of a No Kings Protest sounds stupid. We’re a democratic republic, and we don’t have a King. We have a delegate of Representatives and Senators and a President that we elect. However, what people aren’t realizing or ignoring is that our President idolizes dictators and thinks of himself as King. Don’t believe me? This is what the White House Twitter account posted in February:
Now at the No Kings protest in Nashville there was a counter protestor, and was reported as brandishing a weapon which concerned a lot of people. I remember people actually showing footage of him, and him getting arrested by people who were there or were sent the video. A lot of Trump supporters commented in the respective tweets about how he was ANTIFA (Anti-Facist) and not a MAGA supporter despite him being a counter protestor.
What I find hilarious and ironic about this is that over the past couple of decades there have been right winged terrorists dating back to Ruby Ridge and Waco. Timothy McVeigh was another right wing terrorist. It’s been the MO of these terrorists to use right wing methodology. Democrats either far left or center left are usually against guns and want stricter gun laws so that shootings don’t occur as often as they have been. They’re not going to carry a gun and either threaten people or even think about causing a mass shooting.
Now politics and terrorism aside, the one thing that is concerning, well more like two things that are concerning is this the counter protestor had a Kirsche avatar for his Twitter, and also was a fan of Pipkin Pippa, and had her name scrawled on a shotgun and also had a blanket or a shirt or something with Pippa’s vtuber model on it.
This is shocking because to many people Pippa and Kirsche seem like right wing terrorists themselves. Though on the contrary, Pippa likely is neither nor is Kirsche. Their opinions aren’t at all extreme and as someone who has had to work in retail for 12 years and have spoken to people on both sides of the aisle, their opinions are more or less the opinions of the normal population. A lot of people don’t like protestors blocking the roadways and do feel like they should do something about it because it gets in their way and the way of the Fire Department, and EMS. If they can’t get to an emergency on time or a hospital then that’s going to be more people dying.
And before anyone tries to say “well effective protests have disrupt something” might I offer you that the Chicago Seven held a protest in Grant Park to protest the War in Vietnam and the Democratic National Convention that was being held in Chicago in 1968. They didn’t block the streets, and while they were largely a nusiance at the DNC, many had clashed with the police, but they stuck to Lincoln Park and also Grant Park. They were arrested for trying to start a riot per the Anti-Riot Act otherwise of Title X of the Civil Rights Act of 1968. However, their convictions were later overturned as it violated the First Amendment which believe it or not does have the right to protest. It’s what this country was founded upon whether you like it or not.
At any rate, a large number of people don’t like the roadways to be disturbed. Yes people will say that would like to run over protestors but they don’t mean that they’re actually going to do it. While a few people have done that however, most of the people watching Kirsche and Pippa are adults. Adults are to be held responsible for their own actions. You cannot blame this on Kirsche and Pippa.
Now the ironic thing is that this counter protestor didn’t become a fan of Kirsche’s until after Ana Valens wrote her hit piece on Kirsche. If anything it wasn’t that Kirsche nor Pippa radicalized him, he already was radicalized. This was a guy who idealized and worshipped Nazis before coming into contact Kirsche or Pippa. Who didn’t know who they were until Ana Valens came out with her hit piece, and the counter protestor latched on. Because he thought that Kirsche and Pippa reflected his views. Though Pippa is more so not right winged in any way. She’s blunt and to the point. Kirsche isn’t either. (Though I’m sure far left peeps would consider me right winged, even though I’m center left, though I just really hate their antics.)
Now the problem with Ana Valens is while she thinks that she’s doing a good job by pointing out just how “bad” certain vtubers are however, she’s attracting the wrong kind of people to them. Right attention, bad attention is still attention. If this were to have escalated then we would see the same kind of negative press that video games got in the early 2000’s, and I’m not talking about GamerGate. There was something worse brewing around 2005.
Enter Jack Thompson.
For those of you too young to remember, Jack Thompson was a disbarred lawyer turned activist who had a crusade against violent video games like Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft Auto and others in the early 2000’s. He worked on several court cases in different states to try and hold game makers responsible for crimes that were happening. He was also someone who though that things like rap music and violent video games made people violent and he became a massive thorn in everyone’s side because of that. He sort of fizzled out over the years, especially with attention being put more on GamerGate than him.
But with this controversy it seems like he will pop his head out or someone like him. All this is going to do is cause a bigger issue than just GamerGate, though what is what Ana Valens wants. Though she’s no stranger to controversy with her trying to start shit with VAllure, and Kirsche. Though she seems to have bitten off more than she could chew as she was run off of BlueSky. But maybe she should take this as a warning to not publish hit pieces on people. It’s not worth it. Especially when you’re going to cause more violent people to find vtubers and put their names on their weapons.
It’s why these copycats exist. Because the media covers them, gives their names and then other people decide that they’re going to do the same exact thing. Or why they try to latch onto certain people. All Ana Valens and her cronies are doing is giving cause to violent agendas and then lining people up in the crossfire to take the blame for it. Like Kirsche and Pippa. And it won’t be long before some activist or congressional crony wants to make a law that limits our freedom as Vtubers to be able to say what we want without government interference. That’s the whole thing with Freedom of Speech, we can say what we want without the government telling us no. And now we enter a slippery slope.
I hope that perhaps Ana Valens learns from her mistake, until another Jack Thompson rears their ugly head.
